SLBG News

Thanks for Victoria, Brian, Michelle and Ed for running this years open day event at Yarrow, it was another successful day, following a successful night on the Biggest Ever Bat Walk, where 84 people turned up to join us watching the bats perform a marvellous display. Thanks to those who helped at the walk too —Steve, Fee, Clare, Martyn, Brian, Victoria, John & Margaret—the usual 5 species were encountered.

This years BCT Conference was attended by Steve, Fee, Clare, John HB, Gareth, Martin, Victoria, Pat H, and a good time was had by all.

Steve & Fee attended a Swarming event in the North York Moors with Prof John Altrincham of Leeds University—we caught 47 bats in a harp trap—mainly Natterer’s but a few Daubenton’s, about 10 Long-eared and 1 Whiskered bat. We are now highly keen on finding our own swarming sites. An initial survey at Crank looks promising.

Thanks to Martin for donations at Hall ‘ith Wood and Philips Park bat walks. Also for Arranging the stall at the Go Wild day with Brian and John HB

The car surveys are complete for 2007—SLBG carried out the most of any group—well done—especially to John HB for organising such a successful year.

The SLBG Library & equipment lists will sojnn be available on the website so people can arrange to borrow books and equipment. The new training agreements aand application forms will soon be listed there too. See the members section.

Laura Dunne is the new BCT Bat Groups officer, and has already started in the role, following on from Simon Mickleburgh.

Kirklees Valley will be on ITV over the weekend of 8/9th December. Voting will take place for a large grant allowing access to the Valley. Pease vote in favour of the project as it is competing with a number of other big schemes!

The Bat Conservation Trust has prepared Bat Survey Guidelines that are downloadable from their website. The guidelines aim to provide best practice guidance for those involved in carrying out bat surveys, particularly in a professional capacity, or undertaking research into bat behaviour.

Please remember that, due to changes in the Habitats Regulations, you are now required to have a licence to care for sick and injured bats, for more than 6 months, and to retain any part of a dead bat (for example, the skull). The process of applying for a licence appears fairly simple with a form to download from Natural England’s website.

On a similar theme, if you volunteer for Natural England as a bat roost visitor you are able to get an identification card made up for you, to show to householders. The ID card is only available to fully licensed roost visitor registered with NE. As a NE bat roost visitor volunteer you also need to keep you rabies vaccinations up to date and send a copy of the vaccination record form (completed by your GP) to NE
